Well this is an exciting time to be a composer, especially if you are on a budget. There are free orchestras available already, and you can do some wonderful things with them.
Orchestral Tools recently decided it was time to get some of their Berlin Orchestra into the hands of everyone, at no cost. They released Berlin Free Orchestra, which is a limited version of their larger Berlin Orchestra.
Berlin Free Orchestra is part of a restructure of the entire Berlin Orchestra range from Orchestral Tools. You can now buy the collection in multiple variations, with more libraries included the higher you go up. But the free edition is a great starting point if you want to get some of the Berlin Orchestra sound into your recordings.
The free edition includes 34 different instruments across all sections, including several solo instruments. An interesting note is that on the solo strings, you even get legato. That’s unusual for a free orchestra. You obviously won’t get a full slate of instruments and articulations, but what is there is quite nice. As somebody who owns and loves the larger versions of Berlin Orchestra, I can say it’s a good introduction to the Orchestral Tools universe.
If you are wanting to delve into the Berlin Orchestra lineup, or just want some extra sounds for layering, it won’t cost you anything. Check it out below!
